About Us

The Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR, is located in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, and was organized on Friday, November 12, 1954, in the parish house of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church by 30 founding members. The chapter was called Towamencin from a Native American expression "two men seen" cutting timber near a stream. The Towamencin area is connected to an encampment of Washington's troops and the burial of several officers there. Since its founding, the Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR, has been active within the community and the National Society.

  • The 1963 NSDAR American History Essay Contest winner was a student whose essay was submitted through the Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR.
  • Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR, donated an original George Washington painting, "The Journey" to the Lansdale Historical Society, and presented a DAR Community Service Award to the society for its efforts in creating the Research Center at the Historical Society’s headquarters on Jenkins Avenue in Lansdale.
  • The Labor Lyceum Senior Center was the recipient of several original paintings of historical sites by a Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR, member.

Today the chapter continues to perpetuate the National Society's mission by participating in local parades; publicizing chapter events so that citizens have the opportunity to enjoy our programs and speakers; awarding students who participate in the NSDAR American History Essay Contest and holding an annual workshop for prospective members as well as interested citizens working on genealogy.

Most of the volunteer work of DAR is accomplished under a committee system comprised of national chairs and locally appointed state and chapter chairs. Some of the numerous DAR committees promoting our mission include American Heritage, American History, Community Service, Conservation, Constitution Week, DAR Scholarship, Historic Preservation, and National Defense. We can work together to make sure you play an active role with a committee you enjoy that addresses a subject close to your heart. Whether you hope to have an impact on school-aged children, teachers, nurses, veterans serving our country abroad, or women in this community, we can help you meet your volunteer goals. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
