Service Projects

At the Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR, we strive to actively preserve, support and volunteer. Some ways we do that are by championing patriotism, supporting current and retired Armed Services members, promoting literacy and education and advocating for healthier living.

Championing Patriotism

  • Purchased, installed, and continues to maintain two historical markers – one at the Peter Wentz Home and one for 32 Patriots buried in the Wentz United Church of Christ (UCC) cemetery in Lansdale, Pennsylvania.
  • Helped raise funds to restore the gates at Christ Church in Philadelphia and the Robert Morris window at Valley Forge Cathedral.
  • Cleaned cemetery tombstones at Wentz UCC in Lansdale.
  • Served meals at the local United Service Organizations to families and soldiers.
  • Celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and gave a Certificate of Service to a WWII Veteran who had served six tours in the Pacific.
  • Celebrate Wreaths Across America at Wentz UCC in Lansdale annually.
  • Participate in Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades.
  • Observe Constitution Week annually in local schools, libraries and at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Supporting Current and Retired Armed Service Members

  • Provide Dunkin Donuts to the residents of the Southeastern Veterans Home on Veterans Day and with Rita’s water ice treat for a spring social.
  • Support a resident of Southeastern Veterans Home by providing birthday and holiday presents and cards.
  • Collected 50 books for the Bob Hope Legacy Program. Soldiers read and record a book and send the recording and book home so their child can hear their voices.
  • Purchased a puzzle tray in which residents of Southeastern Veterans Home can store puzzle pieces and compose the puzzle on top.
  • Entertained veterans of Southeastern Veterans Home with therapy mini horses.
  • Sent nine care packages filled with food items, personal products, magazines and games to the USS Key West Submarine through Operation Big Mama.

Promoting Literacy and Education

  • Collected funds for Keystone Opportunity Center, which helps people with English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons, citizenship tests, and General Education Development (GED), so they could purchase calculators for students to use while taking their GED.
  • Raised funds during a DAR Schools social for the Meredith Cottage at Crossnore School & Children’s Home for foster children in North Carolina.
  • Raised funds at an American Indians Committee Luncheon to be used by Chemawa Indian School in Oregon for their annual husbandry and entrepreneurial programs.
  • Hand out flags, flag codes, flag pins, flag pencils and Pledge of Allegiance bookmarks to classrooms in the area on Flag Day.
  • Attend naturalization programs and give our new citizens refreshments, flags, flag pins, flag codes, American’s Creed cards and Preamble cards.
  • Award Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) medals and Good Citizenship Awards to deserving students.

Advocating for Healthier Living

  • Collected and packed travel toiletries to be taken to Laurel House for domestic abuse victims.
  • Provided diapers, detergent, and feminine supplies for Mitzvah Circle for underserved families.
